Community Partnerships

Student Bridges interns work with a variety of partner sites and college awareness and preparation initiatives, including:

William R. Peck K-8 School, Holyoke MA:

Student Bridges tutor-mentors work with classroom teachers to provide additional support for the school’s students. More information can be found here.

Skills, Training, and Enrichment Program (STEP):

The STEP program “is an academic support program for students from the seventh and eight grades in Holyoke. STEP assists youth in obtaining skills and motivation to complete middle school and high school and to enrol in college. The program incorporates interactive and hands-on learning experiences with in-school activities.” The program has sites at several middle schools in Holyoke. More information can be found at http://step-program.com or http://www.hcc.edu/precollege/step.html

College Awareness & Preparation Workshop Series:

Student Bridges hosts college awareness and preparation workshop series for youth from local community based after school programs. In the past, we have worked with NEARI Jump Start, the Holyoke Boys and Girls Club, Youth Leadership in the Arts and El Arco Iris. We are pleased to be partnering with Putnam High School in Springfield, MA to run once a week college awareness and preparation workshops.

Engaging Latino Communities for Education (ENLACE) and “AVANZA 2 College”:

“AVANZA 2 College,” a program of Holyoke Community College’s ENLACE initiative, is designed to strengthen pathways to higher education (and specifically, to Holyoke Community College) for students from Holyoke High School and Dean Technical High School. In partnership with ENLACE and AVANZA 2 College, Student Bridges interns share their experiences transferring to UMass from community colleges and attending 4-year institutions, and they coordinate and host visits to the University.

South End Community Center and New North Citizens Council (Springfield, MA)

Student Bridges is building on it’s first year’s experience to further the partnerships with two community based organizations in Springfield in collaboration with the UMass Extension office. The partnership will include the placement of tutor-mentors in afterschool programs for Springfield middle school students and the implementation of Science, Engineering and Technology material with middle school students in Springfield.

Five College Community Based Learning

Student Bridges has worked with Five College Community Based Learning (FCCBL) for several years. Within the Pioneer Valley FCCBL works towards collaboration, communication and coordination for community based learning experiences for higher education. Student Bridges has been a leader in organizing orientations for these students to both Holyoke and Sprinfield.
